E. Reeve Hitchner, native of New Jersey, joined the faculty of the University of Maine in 1922 following his earlier graduation from Pennsylvania State College with a Master of Science degree in bacteriology. In 1931 he was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Wisconsin.
